“The love of one’s country is a splendid thing. But why should love stop at the border?” –Pablo Casals
Bansuri § Yatri is an upcoming concert project (18 June 2013) being given at the Royal Academy of Music in London, in which I hope to share my discoveries of different music from around the world, particularly music concerning the flute. My goal is to capture the essence of these varying genres with my own video documentation of traditional ensemble performances and also with repertoire from the instrument I have been trained to play for most of my life: the Western classical flute. Though one might initially associate the Western flute with the works of Bach, Gaubert, Fauré, and many other European composers, this instrument is capable of playing much more and is slowly growing a repertoire of pieces based on the music of other countries outside of Europe. This concert, with the Hindi words of ‘bansuri’ (meaning ‘flute’) and ‘yatri’ (meaning ‘traveller’) in its title, essentially depicts who I believe I am as a musician… one who constantly wants to explore how music works in our daily lives and what we can learn from each other in the way we express ourselves through music.
